What Happens at a Clinic
So you've decided to take an STD test, but aren't sure what to
expect when you get to the clinic? Most of the time, it goes something
like this:
- Some clinics may ask for your name but that information
will be kept strictly confidential.
- You'll sign in and may be given a number so that your name
isn't used. The clerk will ask if you or your insurance company can pay
(no problem if you can't - it's covered)
- You'll give permission for tests and treatment by signing a
form. Your parent or guardian doesn't need to sign, or even know you're
there.
- A staffer performs a blood test, usually two teaspoons of
blood. They're only testing for syphilis, not for drugs or any other
reason.
- A nurse or doctor will interview you to find out how they
can help. Then they'll perform an exam or determine what other tests
are needed. Don't worry: it's private and confidential.
- You'll be offered counseling and testing for HIV, the virus
that causes AIDS.
- If you do have an STD, the clinic staff will offer to help
you tell your partner, so he or she can also be tested. You don't have
to say yes, but help is available.
- The clinic will give you any medicine or prescriptions you
might need to treat your STD.
Other Things You Should Know
- You have a right to services whether you are in the US
legally or not, and no one at the clinic will ask about your
citizenship.
- Many clinics provide translators for people who do not
speak English.
- Your medical record is private. Other people can see it
only if you sign a specific form that says this is ok.
- No one likes waiting around, and clinics do their best to
see people as quickly as possible. But sometimes there will be a wait.
Please be patient.
- You can go to any STD Clinic as long as you are 13 years or
older. You do not need parental permission.
